Review of summation-by-parts schemes for initial-boundary-value problems

چکیده
High-order finite difference methods are efficient, easy to program, scale well in multiple dimensions and can be modified locally for various reasons (such as shock treatment for example). The main drawback has been the complicated and sometimes even mysterious stability treatment at boundaries and interfaces required for a stable scheme. The research on summation-byparts operators and weak boundary conditions during the last 20 years has removed this drawback and now reached a mature state. It is now possible to construct stable and high order accurate multi-block finite difference schemes in a systematic building-block-like manner. In this paper we will review this development, point out the main contributions and speculate about the next lines of research in this area.

Efficient Fully Discrete Summation-by-parts Schemes for Unsteady Flow Problems
We make an initial investigation into the numerical efficiency of a fully discrete summation-by-parts approach for unsteady flows. As a model problem for the Navier-Stokes equations we consider a two-dimensional advectiondiffusion problem with a boundary layer. The problem is discretized in space using finite difference approximations on summation-by-parts form together with weak boundary condi...

We make an initial investigation into the temporal efficiency of a fully discrete summation-by-parts approach for stiff unsteady flows with boundary layers. The problem is discretized in space using finite difference approximations on summation-by-parts form togeth...
متن کاملA Roadmap to Well Posed and Stable Problems in Computational Physics
All numerical calculations will fail to provide a reliable answer unless the continuous problem under consideration is well posed. Well-posedness depends in most cases only on the choice of boundary conditions. In this paper we will highlight this fact, and exemplify by discussing well-posedness of a prototype problem: the time-dependent compressible Navier–Stokes equations. We do not deal with...
متن کاملSummation by Parts, Projections, and Stability. I
We have derived stability results for high-order finite difference approximations of mixed hyperbolic-parabolic initial-boundary value problems (IBVP). The results are obtained using summation by parts and a new way of representing general linear boundary conditions as an orthogonal projection. By rearranging the analytic equations slightly, we can prove strict stability for hyperbolic-paraboli...
متن کاملSolving Some Initial-Boundary Value Problems Including Non-classical Cases of Heat Equation By Spectral and Countour Integral Methods
In this paper, we consider some initial-boundary value problems which contain one-dimensional heat equation in non-classical case. For this problem, we can not use the classical methods such as Fourier, Laplace transformation and Fourier-Birkhoff methods. Because the eigenvalues of their spectral problems are not strictly and they are repeated or we have no eigenvalue. The presentation of the s...
